Hi!

Mark Zamudio: I’m from east Anaheim; he’s from middle Anaheim.

Lloyd Chase: West Anaheim.

Mark: That’s not west.

Lloyd: Well, anyhow, by Disneyland.

Mark: The first time I seen Lloyd is better than the first time I met Lloyd. The first time I ever seen you, you were skinny. That’s how long ago it was. I was in an alley in Anaheim.

Lloyd: Wasn’t there drugs involved?

Mark: Of course there was drugs involved. He wasn’t even part of the conversation. But I just remember he shaved his eyebrows off. He had his whole head and his face white and was making no sense.

First time I met him, I brought my girlfriend to this house and everyone – Peter, from The Stitches, he was worried that Lloyd was going to say something to my girlfriend, and I was going to beat him up. I walked in and the first thing Lloyd said was “Look at the gams on her.” And I put my arm around him and he said, “Let me know if your tongue ever gets tired.” And I liked him ever since.

Lee Rickard (Burger Records): Two inappropriate peas in a pod.

RILE SECTION

Mike “Lips” Dunn, because he has no lips.

Mark: He used to live by me in Long Beach and I’d go to his house [stand outside] and I’d go “Mike.” And in the curtain he’d go “What?” He’d be listening to records. So you never saw his face. You just heard him. And then one day I’m like “Dude, I went by your house.” And he goes “I know.”

He’s laying there on the couch and I’m like, “There was no one there.”

He goes “I heard you. I just didn’t answer.”

I think there’s no one in the world that knows more about hardcore music than Mike. Nobody. There should be a hardcore jeopardy. Lips should run hardcore Jeopardy.

Q&A: Lee Rickard

Co-founder of Burger Records

Mark: Lee’s a Rockstar but he’s not known for his skateboarding. I don’t feel Burger’s associated with skateboarding at all.

Lee: We just put out a penny board.

Mark: Exactly. A penny board. Not skateboarding. But my point is you think Burger Records, you think these dudes. You don’t really associate them in the skateboard world, but Lee is one of the best skateboarders that we know.

Lee: Shit. I just skate for fun. Never took myself seriously. Some of my friends that were sponsored and jumping off U-haul trucks and big old flights of stairs and doing handrails I never took it to that level. Not that I’ve done a handrail. Whatever. I didn’t take myself seriously. Just always goofed off and just been silly. But through skateboarding is how I got into shows and discovering more underground punk bands and stuff like that. Going to school with Geoff from Four Letter Words.

Skateboarding is something maybe I don’t do as much as when I was 12 where it consumes your whole being, taking buses to skateparks and just fucking with people on the bus, mobbing with all your friends and just being little hell raisers. I’m not that ambitious but I jump on a skateboard every day.

The first time I ever skated a pool was the Orangewood and Haster pool back in the day and Alva was there. It was kind of intimidating. But then once he split, I made it over the light.

Lloyd: What is your favorite maneuver or trick to perform on your skateboard?

Lee: Just slashing. I don’t have a – like front-side slashes. I like doing wall rides. Not everyone can do them I guess. Just traditional board slides.

Mark: I seen him kick a penny board to board slide on a curb.

Lee: I did some barefoot board slides.

Mark: Barefoot. That’s why he’s a freak. He’s a little like Richie Jackson who's a master god of skateboarding, not your average skateboarding. Weird shit.

Does anyone else in Slack Mafia skate? I heard some of you are pretty good.

Lee: Yeah, Kid Kevin. Geoff Farrell, Richard Hard.

Mark: I heard Maya skates. Is that true?

Lee: He did. Yeah, he was actually alright.

Kari Paradigm: So tell people what the general gist behind Burger Records is.

Lee: Burger Records, for those that don’t know, we started as a self – just self-releasing our old band Makeout Party’s records just following in the DIY tradition of Black Flag and SST and Beat Happening and K and Dischord and Minor Threat, FYP and Recess which was like our big inspiration seeing Todd Congelliere put his friends on payroll and running the show.

And so we were just doing the same thing and we wanted to make a record for us. We put out our own record and then we started putting out our friends’ records and started making tapes. Then in the last 10 years probably one of the fastest growing catalogues in rock and roll history. We have about 1,300 releases, helped bring casette tapes to the forefront of pop culture. I mean it’s all debatable.

Mark: They did turn me back on to tapes. I fucking hate tapes.

Lee: But we put out thousands of different tapes, not just local bands supporting the neighborhood and archiving a time and place but also respecting history and going back and doing archival projects and shedding light on music that we love and think others would love as well. We put on events worldwide. This year we’re doing the Burger Bugaloo July 6 and 7 in Oakland, Calif. It’s going to be our 10th anniversary. And right now that’s our biggest festival. We had The Damned last year and Devo headlined. Year before that we had Iggy Pop and The Buzzcocks.

Kari: When did you realize this was a viable business?

Lee: Never. I’m broke and hungry.

Mark: He doesn’t have to wear shoes and he gets up at 11.

Lee: Bullshit. We open at 11 but maybe at the time, Sean my business partner, not my lover partner like Mark and Lloyd over here.

Mark: We’ll take it.

Lloyd: Sure, why not.

Lee: When we lived in the store we got to sleep in a little bit later. But I rent a room and I’ve been wearing shoes lately. I’ve gone through phases in my life. I went through some stuff, you know loss and things where I gave up on shoes,, underwear, socks, deodorant. I still like to bathe. I like being clean.

I like showers. Showers rule. When we lived in the store, we didn’t have a shower for five years. I didnt’ have a bed for over five years and it kind of fucked me up a little bit and that’s, hence, why I wasn’t wearing shoes. I didn’t give a fuck but I’d skate barefoot. I can do some shit. I don’t recommend it, but... But I’m crazy enough.

Mark: Fuck yeah. Skating barefoot’s gangster. That’s G shit. You can do a trick but if you do it barefoot, motherfucker did it barefoot.... I gotta drain Godzilla and get a beer.

Lee: Alright, good interview.
